The 25 Largest Billboard Companies in the US and Canada (2026)

Updated 2026-10-07

Three companies dominate the billboard business: Lamar Advertising, Clear Channel Outdoor and Outfront Media. Together they account for about 60% of the 416,000+ billboard and poster faces tracked in the OOHGuide directory. But the industry is far from consolidated. Of the 423 operators with a reported face count, 360 run fewer than 500 faces. Most billboards outside the biggest metros are owned by regional and family-run companies.

Here is the ranking.

Face counts are compiled from Billboard Insider's 2025 operator lists and operator websites, as recorded in the OOHGuide directory in October 2026. A "face" is one advertising surface, so a two-sided billboard counts as two faces. Counts include posters and other formats where reported, and companies update their inventories constantly, so treat these as approximate.

The big three

Lamar Advertising

Lamar is the largest billboard company in North America by a wide margin, with roughly 160,000 faces. Founded in 1902 and based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, it is strongest in small and midsize markets across the South, Midwest and Mountain West, which is why its boards show up on so many highways outside the major metros. It also runs one of the largest digital billboard networks, around 5,000 digital faces. See Lamar's profile.

Clear Channel Outdoor

Clear Channel Outdoor focuses on large metro areas and airports. Its US business is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, and it runs nearly 2,000 digital faces. See Clear Channel's profile.

Outfront Media

Outfront Media, based in New York, is a major player in the largest US cities and in transit advertising, including subway and commuter rail systems. It became an independent public company in 2014. See Outfront's profile.

The regional leaders

Below the big three, a group of large regional companies own thousands of boards each in their home territories:

  • Adams Outdoor runs about 10,000 faces, with a big presence in the Carolinas, Michigan and the Midwest.
  • Reagan Outdoor is based in Salt Lake City, with markets in Utah and across Texas.
  • Link Media covers Missouri, Kansas, Illinois and the Plains.
  • Lindmark Outdoor Media is focused on Oklahoma and New Mexico.
  • Huntington Outdoor covers Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and markets across the South.

In Canada, Pattison Outdoor and Bell Media (Astral) are the largest operators.

Digital specialists

A few companies have a much higher share of digital faces than the typical operator. Orange Barrel Media of Columbus, Ohio, best known for large urban digital displays, has about 1,200 digital faces out of 2,200. Vendo Media, Tyler Outdoor, Trailhead Media and New Tradition Media also run large digital networks relative to their size.

Should you buy from a big company or an independent?

Both have advantages.

National companies are a good fit when you need many markets at once, premium highway or downtown locations, or a single contract and invoice. They have the most inventory in big metros.

Independent and regional operators often have:

  • Lower rates and shorter minimum contracts
  • More flexibility on pricing and terms
  • Strong local locations the big companies don't own
  • Direct access to the owner or a small sales team

In many small and midsize markets, the best boards belong to a local company. That is why it pays to get quotes from more than one operator. Learn more in our guide to how to rent a billboard.
