Mobile Billboards: How Much They Cost and When They Work

Updated 2026-10-07

A mobile billboard is an ad on a vehicle, usually a box truck with large static or digital LED panels on its sides and back, that drives a planned route or parks at a chosen spot. Instead of waiting for people to drive past a fixed billboard, the billboard goes to them.

How much does a mobile billboard cost?

Mobile billboards are usually priced by the hour, day, week or month. As a real example, Billboard Express publishes these rates for digital LED trucks (rate page):

Booking Published price
Hourly $175 per hour, 8 hour minimum
One day About $1,400 (8 hours at $175)
Weekly $7,500 per week (5 days, 8 hours a day)
Monthly $24,000 per month (5 days a week, 8 hours a day)
6 month contract $20,000 per month

The same company estimates that a typical mobile billboard campaign runs $1,000 to $6,000 a week, depending on hours and market. Prices are higher in big, congested metros and for digital trucks, and lower for static vinyl trucks and smaller markets. Longer bookings usually bring the effective daily rate down.

What drives the price

  • Hours on the road. Most providers have a daily minimum.
  • Static vs digital. Static trucks carry printed vinyl; digital trucks show rotating or video content and cost more.
  • Exclusivity. Some trucks show only your ad; shared digital trucks rotate several advertisers at a lower price.
  • Market. Big cities cost more because of demand, traffic, parking and driver costs.
  • Production. Static trucks need printed vinyl, which adds cost. Digital needs only a file.
  • Extras. GPS tracking, route reports, permits for parking at events, and sound or sampling teams.

Mobile billboard vs fixed billboard

Mobile billboard Fixed billboard
Typical booking Hours, days or weeks 4 week periods and up
Location Moves to where your audience is One fixed location
Best use Events, launches, short bursts Ongoing awareness and directions
Cost for a month About $24,000 full time for a digital truck in the example above About $1,500 to $5,000 for a static board in many cities

A fixed billboard is almost always cheaper for long, steady campaigns. Mobile billboards win when you need to be in specific places at specific times.

When mobile billboards work best

  • Events and conventions. Park outside a stadium, concert or trade show.
  • Product launches and grand openings. Saturate an area for a few days.
  • Hiring campaigns. Drive past competitors' locations or job-heavy areas.
  • Political campaigns. Reach specific neighborhoods before an election.
  • Places with no billboards. Many downtowns and some cities restrict new billboards, but trucks can still drive through (check local rules).
  • Testing. Try outdoor advertising for a few days without a long contract.

Tips for booking a mobile billboard

  1. Plan the route around your audience. Ask the provider to suggest routes and parking spots based on your goal.
  2. Ask for GPS reports. Reputable providers show you exactly where the truck went.
  3. Check local rules. Some cities limit mobile billboards, idling or where they can park.
  4. Design for movement. Same rules as any billboard: very few words, bold type and high contrast. See our billboard design tips.
  5. Compare to fixed options. For campaigns longer than a few weeks, get quotes for fixed billboards too.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mobile billboard cost per day?

Commonly around $1,000 to $2,000 for a full day, depending on the market and truck type. One provider publishes $175 an hour with an 8 hour minimum, or about $1,400 a day.

Are mobile billboards cheaper than regular billboards?

Not for long campaigns. A fixed billboard rented for a month usually costs far less than a truck running full time. Mobile billboards are best for short, targeted bursts.

Are mobile billboards legal?

In most places, yes, but some cities restrict them. Ask your provider about local rules before booking.

Can I rent a mobile billboard for one day?

Yes. Many providers offer single-day bookings, usually with a minimum number of hours.
