Best Programmatic DOOH Platforms (2026): Vistar vs Hivestack vs StackAdapt and More
Updated 2026-10-29
Short answer: there's no single best programmatic DOOH platform; it depends on who's buying. Agencies and big brands usually buy through a DOOH specialist like Vistar Media or Hivestack, or add DOOH to an omnichannel DSP like The Trade Desk. Smaller teams that already buy digital ads can self-serve on StackAdapt. Local businesses are usually better off with Blip, AdQuick or buying direct from the operator.

The platforms compared
| Platform | Type | Owner | Best for | Self-serve? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vistar Media | DOOH DSP, SSP and ad server | T-Mobile | Agencies and brands buying DOOH at scale in the US | Mostly managed or agency-operated |
| Hivestack | DOOH DSP, SSP and ad server | Perion | International DOOH campaigns; Perion's multi-channel clients | Mostly managed or agency-operated |
| The Trade Desk | Omnichannel DSP | Public company | Agencies adding DOOH to online, CTV and audio buys | Agency seats; best with an in-house team |
| StackAdapt | Omnichannel DSP | Independent | Smaller agencies and in-house teams | Yes, self-serve tier |
| Broadsign Ads | DOOH DSP | Broadsign | Buyers who want Broadsign's large screen network | Yes, though less suited to small tests |
| AdQuick | Marketplace plus DOOH DSP | Independent | Brands wanting static, digital and programmatic in one place | Yes (AdQuick GO), plus a planning team |
| Blip | Self-serve per-play | Independent | Local businesses testing digital billboards | Yes, credit card |
Ownership: T-Mobile closed its roughly $600 million purchase of Vistar on February 3, 2025 (T-Mobile); Perion bought Hivestack for $100 million in December 2023 (MediaPost). Fit notes for The Trade Desk and Broadsign Ads draw on AdQuick's overview of self-serve platforms, a competitor's view.
Vistar vs Hivestack
These two are the closest head-to-head: both sell the full stack, with a DSP for buyers and an SSP and ad server for screen owners.
| Vistar Media | Hivestack | |
|---|---|---|
| Founded | 2012, New York | 2017, Montreal |
| Owner | T-Mobile (since 2025) | Perion Network (since 2023) |
| Reach | 1.1 million+ screens; technology for about 370 media owners | 32 countries |
| Products | DSP, SSP/exchange, ad server | DSP, SSP, ad server, header bidder, measurement |
| Strength | One of the largest US footprints; supplies DOOH to other DSPs, including StackAdapt | International reach; supplies DOOH to The Trade Desk through a global partnership |

How to pick between them: if your campaign is US-only and scale matters most, Vistar is the usual starting point. If you're running in several countries, or you're already working with Perion, Hivestack is the natural fit. Many agencies use both, because each reaches some screens the other doesn't.
Is Vistar a DSP? Yes, and more. Vistar runs a DSP for buyers, but also an exchange that sells its screen supply to other DSPs and ad serving software for media owners. When StackAdapt users buy DOOH, for example, much of that inventory comes through Vistar.
The omnichannel DSPs
The Trade Desk lets agencies buy DOOH in the same platform as their web, CTV and audio campaigns, through supply partnerships such as Hivestack's global deal and regional partners like Talon in the UK and AiOO in the Middle East (Daily DOOH; ExchangeWire; Zawya). It's powerful, but it's built for agencies with trading teams, not first-time buyers.
StackAdapt added DOOH in October 2022 through Vistar (Business Wire) and has a self-serve tier. It's one of the easiest ways for a small agency to add DOOH to a campaign it's already running.
Google Display & Video 360 also supports DOOH buying for advertisers already in Google's ad stack.
What you'll pay
Programmatic DOOH is priced by CPM, the cost per thousand estimated viewers:
| Venue | Typical CPM |
|---|---|
| Highway digital billboards | $2 to $15 |
| Street-level panels | $4 to $12 |
| Transit screens | $5 to $18 |
| Place-based screens (gyms, malls, bars, offices) | $6 to $25 |
Source: AdQuick. The average programmatic OOH CPM was about $7.62 in the second half of 2024 (MediaPost).
Minimums: none of Vistar, Hivestack or StackAdapt publishes a minimum. Managed-service programmatic campaigns often require $10,000 to $50,000, while self-serve DSPs can start much lower. On top of media, expect DSP and agency fees, usually a percentage of spend. Ask how much of your CPM actually reaches the screen owner.
How to choose a DOOH platform
- Where's your campaign? US-only campaigns often start with Vistar; multi-country favors Hivestack or VIOOH-connected buying.
- Who's running it? An agency trading desk can use any of them. A two-person marketing team should look at self-serve options like StackAdapt or AdQuick.
- What screens matter? Ask which SSPs and media owners each DSP connects to. Big networks sell through Place Exchange, VIOOH, Vistar and Hivestack, and not every DSP reaches every screen.
- How will you measure it? Look for proof-of-play reporting, the source of impression estimates (Geopath or the owner's own model) and attribution options.
- Do you need programmatic at all? For a few boards near one location, buying direct or using Blip is simpler. See programmatic vs direct.
